The Round Up - Episode 6
Welcome to Episode 6 of the LUXBMX Weekly Round Up, where we present to you the very latest news, videos, sponsorship updates, competition/jam reports and all things awesome in the BMX world. We are now back in full swing and will be providing regular updates to keep you up to speed.
- Ramp Attack, Blackstone is now open
This episode comes with some exciting news for BMX bikers in South East Queensland, with the indoor skatepark ‘Ramp Attack’ (previously located in Geebung on the north side of Brisbane) having now re-opened at a new location at 3 Mary Street, Blackstone (Ipswich). If you know where Bundamba skatepark is located, then you are pretty close, just head south for a couple kilometers and you will have arrived. The park has been completely re-designed and is just begging for a roll. Head down, support the business and have yourself a good time riding some smooth as hell ply without the threat of weather.

Speaking of indoor riding spots, although a little more in the ‘Do It Yourself’ (DIY) style, S&M & Tempered lord Jon MacKellar has been busy working on a spot in Brisbane’s western suburbs. Reimagining an abandoned warehouse, Jon and a bunch of mates have been putting in the hard yards to create a riding space made out of scrap timber and pallets. Jon is the living, breathing symbol of BMX passion and a great example of how you can build something from nothing. In addition to this spot, Jon has also led the creation of a concrete DIY spot dubbed ‘Egypt’ as well as being a central figure in the revamping of Sumners Road trails. To celebrate the collective effort, Jon has just recently announced a ‘West Brisbane Boogie’ jam which is to run over the weekend of the 17-19 March and feature each of these locations with the aim of raising money for the non-governmental organisation SABSA BMX (‘Share a Bike, Share a Smile’) who collect and donate parts to support riders in developing countries. As things progress, keep an eye out on the LUX socials for more information.
- Keep your eyes peeled for the next jam at Jon MacKellar's concrete DIY spot, ‘Egypt’
Another jam to highlight is a LUXBMX backed day at Brisbane’s finest (and one of the oldest) concrete mecca, Woodridge. Situated in the lush, leafy surrounds of Logan’s fringes, Woodridge skatepark will test your stamina and your bravery, whilst offering some of the toughest concrete as well as a bunch of unique elements such as a hipped sub-rail. The event took place on a sunny Saturday afternoon with tonnes of riders making the effort to enjoy a bunch of DIY pallet additions to the park, support the local scene and catch up with other bikers. Spearheaded by LUX and Wethepeople flow rider Mitch ‘Meezy’ Campbell, this is just another example of why Brisbane BMX is as healthy as it is. Expect to see content from the day on the LUX socials as the week unfolds.
- Declan Kilpatrick Subrosa X Shadow Conspiracy
One rider you might catch at a future jam is Declan Kilpatrick, who just recently found himself a spot on the Subrosa & Shadow Conspiracy flow teams, through Triple 6 distribution. To celebrate the occasion, Declan has been putting in work for a welcome video which has just recently been released - see here. The video showcases the dudes tall-boy swagger as he works his way through a slew of South East Queensland spots. Soundtracked by Kylie Minogue and featuring lots of genuine stoke, the video makes you welcome the kid getting some shine time.
- LUXBMX Filmer Troy Charlesworth and LUXBMX Pro Boyd Hilder Battling Bali
Another video which caught my attention is an Odyssey x Boyd Hilder project produced by Troy Charlesworth, titled ‘Battling Bali’. The video was anticipated to be 8 x days worth of good times, beachside lurking alongside exploring the parks and laneways of Indonesia’s tourist hotspots, however a series of unfortunate events brought some shade to the boy's plans. Nonetheless, even with injuries, sickness and poor weather, Boyd and Troy were able to deliver an incredibly entertaining piece. The construction of this video is done in such a way as to focus on the story behind the trip, culminating with a shiver-inducing amalgam of song and riding at 3.45, giving the viewer a genuine sense of what it might have felt like to be a part of the trip. Well done dudes.

The LUXBMX media team have been in overdrive capturing the sights and sounds of the recent ‘Off The Couch’ jam, presented by our own Boyd Hilder. Existing as the third iteration, a bunch of hungry BMXers descend to the grounds of ‘Pizzey’ park (near Miami on the Gold Coast) and enjoy the thrills of a jam at one of South East Queensland’s premier skateparks. With poor weather threatening to cancel the event, there was a real chance that things weren’t going to proceed, so when the sun cracked through in the afternoon, relief was aplenty. The jam is slowly becoming a milestone on the BMX calendar, something to look forward to, something to build excitement and momentum. While there were plenty of wild moments on the day, I’ll avoid detailing them here and direct your attention to an in-depth interview with Boyd about the event with 2 x incredible videos of the day as produced by Troy Charlesworth. Do yourself a favour and check that feature.

Episode 6 done and dusted. The theme of the day being jams, the lesson of the day being that jams are the backbone of a thriving BMX scene. Having said that, props to Jon MacKellar and Boyd Hilder and all those behind the scenes who put in the work to keep the BMX dream alive.
